MLM Leader or MLM Guru?…What’s It Gonna Be?

I set out today to write a post about an amazing private MLM Leadership webinar I attended yesterday hosted by an specatcular MLM Leader, Ray Higdon.  I was thinking about all the valuable content he shared, how I could be an even better MLM leader to my team and others in the MLM community.  So many ideas about what to share because there was so much amazing content.

Should I blog about the 3 problem areas most MLM Leaders face?  Should I share about how to identify your perfect prospect and focus on how to solve their problems?  Should I tell you all the amazing tidbits Ray shared with us lucky MLM leaders based on his studies of John Maxwell’s books?  Or perhaps I should blow your mind with what Ray shared with us about intellectual property -  what it is, as an MLM Leader why you need it, where to find it and how to create and leverage it…

What should I blog about?

Well, guess what, I’m not gonna blog about any of those things…today…

No, today, because MLM leadership is clearly on my mind, I’m going to tell you about my journey as an MLM Leader this past year and what’s been happening to me.

Those of you who are loyal readers have probably noticed my sporadic postings this past year.  And, before I go blogging about MLM Leadership and other citing other people’s content, I think it’s important to be completely transparent with you about me.

Can a true MLM Leader get burnout?

Last year, I saved myself from a succumbing to a serious case of burnout.  That’s right, I nearly burnt myself out of my business.  For the past 14 years I have been working a very high level, high stress corporate J.O.B. and for the past 3 of those years, I have also been an Entrepreneur, and a mom and a wife, etc.  You know the drill.  I’m sure many of you reading this right now have been trying to balance your life, your J.O.B., your business and a bunch of other things too.

That’s why this burnout conversation is so important.

Three years ago, I began my journey to become an MLM Leader …

…with a blindfold on and my hands tied behind my back and in my search to figure it all out, I came upon an amazing community of people that taught me internet marketing … the answer to all my problems of how to create success in network marketing and become an MLM Leader. …or so I thought.

I threw myself in like there was no tomorrow, learning every program, every system, every tool, every possible way to create and syndicate content, make videos, blogs, backlinks, articles, ezines, PPC, social media…you name it, I learned it.  My appetite was voracious and I fed it.  I posted, I blogged, I Facebooked and Tweeted.  I woke up at 5 am and went to bed at 1 am.

And guess what?  It all worked.  I generated tons of leads every day, people were jumping into my business and calling ME…  It was just like they said…except for the part where I got so burnt out that I didn’t even want to touch my blog or look at a video camera for almost a year…Oh and for the part where I realized that all that wasn’t duplicable and my team was struggling.

Well, let me qualify that, what I was doing wasn’t duplicable…  Simply put:  Being a guru is not duplicable.  And instead of becoming the MLM Leader I set out to become, all I was on the path to become was some sort of guru.  I had a following, sure.  People joining me, sure.  But then they tried to do what I did and many of them failed.  Why?  …Because being an MLM Guru is not duplicable!

What I did wasn’t sustainable or duplicable.  So, I pulled back.  Started focusing on balance, instead of trying to do everything.  Started focusing on improving my MLM Leader skills.  Started focusing on building locally and using the internet as a tool to connect with people instead of the be all and end all.  Started learning duplicable skills and systems that people who aren’t guru-bound, could learn and prosper with too.  Oh yeah, and I let myself have a little bit of sleep and little bit of fun too

And guess what?  This stuff works!

Being an MLM Leader doesn’t have to mean killing yourself to the point of exhaustion.  It means being the inspired example that people can follow and duplicate to achieve their own success.

So, I’m taking this moment to share this story with you because I know there are lots of people out there who are reading this right now (you?) that are killing themselves trying to do all this fancy stuff in order to be an MLM Leader and guess what, you can stop.  Breathe.  Do what’s simple and duplicable, because your team (even if you don’t have one yet) is counting on that so they can do it too.

You can follow great MLM Leaders like Ray Higdon, Erwin McKen, Dave Lovett, etc …And if you really look at them and others like them who have a great, big, growing DUPLICATING team, they are keeping it real…simply connecting with as many people as possible, inviting and following up.  That’s it.
So, that’s what’s been on my mind.  Whew!  And now that this is off my chest, I expect you’ll be hearing a lot more from me in the coming, days, weeks, months, years. …and that feels great!

MLM Leaders.  The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.  I’ve had them all.   Have you? 

Unfortunately, most people don’t get to work with truly inspired MLM Leaders. 

And for those of you who have a crappy sponsor, and a crappy upline and a crappy leader, I bet you’d wonder what it’s like to work with an incredibly awesome, giving, talented, fun, rockin’ group of MLM Leaders each and every day to build your business.

Well, knowing that great MLM Leaders don’t grow on trees (or even in every Network Marketing company), I decided to give you an idea of just what happens when you get a hotel room, packed to the gills with MLM Leaders chillin’ after an event.

BTW, have you ever been to a live event?

[HINT: If you are successful and making money, you just said “Of course I have Amy!  Are you nuts?!  All MLM Leaders attend events!”]

Well, at live events, as you KNOW, all the best stuff really happens before, after and in-between all the formal training and speakers.  When you rub shoulders with amazing MLM Leaders at events, hang out with them, have a meal, catch a quiet moment in the corner of the room, play blackjack (hey, we were in Vegas!), or even chill out in the hotel room of the MLM Leaders after all is said and done, that’s where the magic happens.

So, here is your hidden camera, fly-on-the-wall opportunity to voyeuristically peer into a hotel room full of MLM Leaders like Ray Higdon, David Wood, Erwin McKen, Dave Lovett, Larry Beacham, (Oh yeah, I was there too … and you can see a sliver of the magic that happens when that energy all goes into focus…It’s magical.

BTW, that was only 4ish minutes of a session that lasted over an hour. 

Ask yourself:  Does your business have MLM Leaders like that? 

Do you get to connect with them across the whole company – downline, upline, crossline, sideline …anywhere in the entire company and build together?  Because that’s the way it should be. 

You deserve to be in a company that has vision, and great leadership that will show you the way to success.  You deserve to be learning from great MLM Leaders that will teach you what they know and mentor you whether they earn from you or not!  You deserve that!

So, what do you do if you don’t have that?  You have 2 options.  Option 1: Build it anyway.  Period.  You can, you know.  You’re capable of figuring it out if you want it bad enough.  Option 2: Stop reinventing the wheel and align yourself with the right MLM Leaders and join a team that will help you get yourself there. 

So which of the MLM Leaders are you gonna choose?  The Good?  Or The Bad and The Ugly?

I’ve been thinking a lot about leadership lately, particularly as it relates to the Network Marketing industry and how good MLM Leaders operate.  In addition to the great MLM Leaders I’m privileged to work with in my primary business, I see a lot of “pseudo-leaders” purporting to be TRUE leaders and it got me thinking…What does a true MLM Leader look like? 

I’ve got to give you a little context here so stick with me for a  quick sec as I back track…

When I first arrived on the scene I crawled onto the internet like many do, searching MLM Leaders and for the answer to how to find success in Network Marketing. …Hoping and praying that I didn’t have to talk to anyone I know because I had “no warm market” (of course that was before I knew HOW to talk to my warm market and create a warm market from scratch, and before I had total belief in what I was doing). 

Anyway, I was lucky enough that one of the great MLM Leaders who knew exactly how to target folks like me put an ad in my face on Google (a PPC ad) and this targeted ad spoke right to me.  I bought his product and it was pretty darn great (MLSP).  With laser-focused determination and consistent action I was able to quickly build a following, earn multiple streams of income online and sponsor a bunch of people into my primary business. 

Through my partnership with the awesome MLM Leaders and marketers in MLSP, I have found a community and learned how to market.  And I have come to surround myself with some truly spectacular marketers, much greater than myself, from whom I learn on a continual basis.

Here’s my point…Because I learned HOW to market, I can now spot “Marketing” when it’s being directed at me, and I can now spot “Marketing” disguised as “Leadership” as well.  Sometimes they come packaged in the same person – I have been privileged to meet and get to know many fantastic true Leaders who are also great Marketers –

BUT many times what we think of as a Leader is really only a great Marketer who knows how to push your buttons and sell. 

So, to give you a shortcut to spotting them, here’s what I think are the signs of  TRUE  MLM LEADERS in Network Marketing:

1-MLM Leaders are committed to ONE MLM business and do not split their focus on several. 

Now there’s nothing wrong with multiple streams of income…A diversified portfolio is just smart.  But until you’ve proven yourself as a top earner in one Network Marketing company, I firmly believe you should not add on any other MLM, because as a leader, your team looks to you for guidance and that is just darn confusing for them.  A confused team does not succeed…In fact, they quit. 

2-MLM Leaders are committed to assisting you succeed and give you all the tools to do so. 

I don’t mean just tools like a sales funnel and some CDs (although those are great!) but I mean a simple system that can be duplicated by YOUR team and the TRAINING to use them.  I’ve learned that systems are the key to duplication, which of course is the key to residual income.  Sponsoring is great, but duplicating is key.  My biggest lesson of last year:  Don’t do what works, do what duplicates.  

3-A true Leader has integrity. 

They don’t tell you one minute that XYZ company is THE greatest opportunity they have ever seen, and then 6 months or so later tell you that it’s not really all that, but that this NEW company is THE greatest thing they have ever seen, etc…How are you supposed to believe someone who tells you that what HE said was the gospel wasn’t really the gospel? 

So, either he was: A-lying or B-wrong.  Either way, it’s not so good.  A true leader, in my opinion, finds a company with integrity and that aligns with their values and barring any weird stuff, sticks with it.   Remember, whatever YOU do, your prospect will be asking themselves “Can I do that?”.  So, if a Leader opportunity hops, aren’t they just training a whole team of people to do the same?   Makes you go..Hmmmm....

I guess this is a little bit of a rant, which is not usually my style, but heck, it’s a new year and I’m straight shooter so why not share with you exactly what’s on my mind today? 

Takeaway:  Do your research on who you decide to follow and partner up with in this industry.  Follow your GUT and trust those who are in alignment with your core values.  There are some awesome Leaders in the awesome industry of Network Marketing and I’m proud to be associated with and have learned from many of them.

You can’t succeed in Network Marketing….Network Marketing doesn’t work.  LOL.  That’s funny.  Of course it works, but so many people get started and then quit with that mentality.  Did you ever notice that?

I bet you’ve noticed that some people join your team and then quit, right?  Sometimes within a week, sometimes a month, somtimes months later…but a lot of ‘em quit.  Let’s face it, you’d have to be deaf, dumb and blind in this industry to not have seen attrition in action. 

Well, recently I attended a live event where I got to hear one of my mentors, Jerry Clark, speak.  Jerry has built multi-million dollar organizations in network marketing and now is one of the most respected (and hilariously funny!) trainers in the biz.   I made sure to corner Jerry and grill him on this subject because I really believe that understanding this is key to succeed in Network Marketing.

…Well, nothing…on the surface.  However, I was home sick the other day…no strength for anything other than laying around in bed and watching movies.  I flipped on “Rocky”.  It’s been a long time since I watched it.  But, no matter how dated certain things are about that film, the message is still the same: Stop at nothing until you achieve your goal.  Become the winner you already know you are inside and no matter what happens, you must get there.

In watching this I had forgotten a key moment that changed his journey (hey, it’s been a long time since I watched it).  When he is first offered the opportunity to fight for the championship, he turns it down.  He says no.  No to a shot at the title.!! Isn’t that what people do every day when they pass by an opportunity at achieving wealth when they say no to your network marketing business?  But here’s the difference, Rocky quickly realized that he had his shot.  And one this big might never come again.  And, like those of us to made a commitment to change our lives with Network Markeitng, he took it. 

That’s us in that boxing ring.  We’re Rocky.  We’re the ones who saw a shot at the title and took it.  We’re the ones who have the chance to achieve everything we desire because we recognized an opportunity and took it!  We ARE Rocky.

This was made even clearer as I watched Rocky get his face bashed in over and over and over again.  At one point during the final world championship fight, after many, many brutal rounds of fighting, he falls.  His own manager is telling him to stay down.  But Rocky, the true winner that he is, scrapes up every ounce of strength he can to pull himself up on the ropes and go back for more.  Inspiring.

Well, inspiring to me…and to anyone else like us who knows they are a winner, a leader inside.  But interesting how the person outside the ring who cares about Rocky very much, told him to quit.  Sure, it was well-meaning, but does that seem at all familiar to you?

Doesn’t this mirror the experience we sometimes have as Network Marketers.  Don’t people outside of our “ring” see us struggling and with all the best intentions, encourage us to quit.  And guess what, 95% of you will  95% of you reading this article right now, will quit when it gets difficult.  95% of you will miss out on the wealth and freedom that Network Marketing has to offer because you quit when it got tough.  And that’s a shame.

Here’s what you need to understand in order to truly achieve success in our business (or ANY business).  It can get tough sometimes.  Challenges happen.  People sign up and quit.  People swear they’ll show up to a meeting and don’t come.  People swear they’ll watch a presentation and never do it.  Stuff happens.  Who cares….

…Because you have a choice.  You can quit when it gets hard and say “this doesn’t work”. …or you can be Rocky.  Pick your sweat-soaked, battered body up off the ring floor, grab onto those ropes and pull yourself up and get back in the G-A-M-E. 

And soon it will be you running up to the top of the Philadelphia steps and dancing around with that great music playing.
